Welcome to my dark romance haven, where we explore stories that mix love with danger, obsession, and chaos. If you’re a fan of heart-pounding, boundary-pushing tales, you’re in the right place!

I’m Summer, and today I’m diving into Blood Oath by Morgan B. Lee, Book 1 of the Cursed Legacies series. This spoiler-free review will give you a taste of Blood Oath‘s chaotic humor, danger and push-and-pull dynamic without ruining the twists.

When I first read this book, I couldn’t put it down. Despite the knowledge that I needed sleep, this book stole hours from me and by the time I put it down (when I finished it), the sun was rising again. Blood Oath is captivating, and I’m excited to share my thoughts with all of you!

As with nearly all dark romance novels, this book does have mature themes that may not be for everyone. If you are sensitive to certain triggers, please check the trigger warnings before reading.

BOOK OVERVIEW

Blood Oath follows Maven during her time at Everbound University, a mandatory graduate school for the creatures that go bump in the night. She’s there to complete a dangerous mission, but her plans go sideways when she’s matched with four notable, powerful legacies:

Silas Crane, the cutthroat blood fae
Baelfire Decimus, the charismatic dragon shifter
Everett Frost, the ice elemental professor
Crypt DeLune, the Nightmare Prince (and my favorite!)

Now, Maven must figure out how to get rid of the rest of her quintet and complete her mission, before it’s too late.

WHAT WORKED

Blood Oath is full of mystery and danger, with lovable, obsessive and protective male leads. Each character has a distinct personality, unique motivations and clear voices. The male leads know each other, but don’t have great relationships with each other at the beginning of the book. Relationships with other characters outside the harem have their own depth and dynamics, like Maven’s relationship with Kenzie and the members of Kenzie’s quintet.

Maven’s history, her motivations and what’s at stake are left a mystery, with only small hints dropped here and there. This is great for moving the plot forward and keeping readers interested and invested.

WHAT DIDN’T

Some dialogue didn’t quite hit right due to modern slang (example: rizz master), which can be off-putting for a lot of readers (myself included) and can date a novel. Thankfully, this didn’t happen much (only once or twice that I noticed), so it was pretty easy to move past.

There are also a lot of similarities between the characters in Blood Oath (specifically Maven and Kenzie) with the TV show Wednesday on Netflix. This isn’t really a huge issue for me, because inspiration can come from anywhere and the similarities are largely surface-deep. The core plot elements and romantic interests are all unique and unrelated to the TV show.

WHO WOULD ENJOY

Those who enjoyed the TV show Wednesday on Netflix and enjoy reverse harem romances would likely love this book. This book is also a good option for those who love a strong and capable heroine and a devoted cast of love interests, and for those who love unravelling mysteries.

While this book does feature the trope Insta-Love, it is not for those who dislike slow-burn romances.
